Our Mission, Our Goals

The Hungarian Parent Teacher Association of New York, the Arany Janos School’s parent organization is a non-profit educational and community-building organization that welcomes members from all religious and political backgrounds. Our primary goal is to teach Hungarian to younger generations as well as to preserve our cultural heritage as Hungarian Americans. It was first established in 1963 by a handful of enthusiastic educators and former members of the Hungarian Scouts. The Program has grown considerably since its humble beginnings and it now educates children from infancy through middle school. Today the Arany Janos School is the only Hungarian-language educational organization in New York City.

Our Educational Approach

The Arany Janos School recognizes that our students are exceptional in that their educational needs are shaped by their upbringing as first-, second-, and third generation Hungarian Americans. To be successful in educating such students requires an approach that can be quite different from what is offered by the traditional Hungarian-, or American educational models. Our “Arany” teachers work especially hard to build a curriculum that reflects these varying needs. Integral to their method is their goal to provide a supportive learning environment to foster a sense of community in each and every child who enters our program.

Our Educators

The Arany Janos School prides itself in the fact that all of our teachers hold degrees in education from various accredited institutions both in Hungary as well as in the surrounding regions. It is because of this level of professionalism that they are able to mold their curriculum to fit the needs of their classroom in New York City. Furthermore, as they tend to teach the same group of children for a number of years, teachers and students form strong bonds – not to mention the life-long friendships that develop between the children of our school.

Classes are held every Saturday from 9:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. at the Hungarian House (213 East 82nd Street, NY, NY 10028) as well as at the First Hungarian Baptist Church (225 East 80th Street, NY, NY 10075).
