Our Mission, Our Goals

The Hungarian Parent Teacher Association of New York, the Arany Janos School’s parent organization is a non-profit educational and community-building institution that welcomes members from all religious and political backgrounds. Our primary goal is the preserving and teaching of the Hungarian language both in the classroom as well as in the communities our program helps to build through shared cultural experiences and traditions.

The Arany Janos School’s parent organization was first established in 1976 by a handful of enthusiastic educators and former Hungarian Scouts. It is now the only Hungarian-language educational institution in New York. The program has grown considerably since its humble beginnings and it now educates children from infancy through the 8th grade.

Our Educational Approach

We at the Arany Janos School recognize that our student body is quite exceptional and that their educational needs tend to be shaped by their upbringing as first-, second-, and third generation Hungarian immigrants. Their approach to learning can therefore be quite different from what is offered in a strictly Hungarian-, or European educational model.
Our educators therefore work especially hard to build a curriculum that reflects our students varying needs, as well as to provide a supportive learning environment that helps to foster a sense of community in each and every child who comes through our door.

Our Educators

The Arany Janos School prides itself in the fact that all of our teachers hold master degrees in education from various accredited institutions both in Hungary as well as in the surrounding regions. It is because of this level of professionalism that they are able to mold their curriculum to fit the needs of their classroom in New York City. Furthermore, as they tend to teach the same group of children for a number of years, teachers and students form strong relationships – not to mention the life-long friendships that develop between the children of our school.

Hours of Operation

Classes are held every Saturday from 9:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. at the Hungarian House (213 East 82nd Street, NY, NY 10028) as well as at the First Hungarian Baptist Church (225 East 80th Street, NY, NY 10075). Our youngest students in the Bobita Mommy and Me play group meet every Saturday from 11:00 A.M. to 11:50 A.M.
